Welcome to PSYCH 5 -- Mrs. Graff -- cgraff@bcconline.com -- Barstow College

Welcome to the Psyc/Soci 15 Midterm for Fall 2006!

This test covers Chapters 1 - 4 in the Okun book, the Introduction through Self-Disclosure in the Small book, and lectures for weeks one-four. The test is open book, notes and lessons, but NOT open friends.  Be sure to answer each question. A Caution: **DO NOT** click the "submit your midterm" button before you are finished with this exam. Your first submission WILL BE the test that is graded. Also, be sure to put your name/email address on this exam immediately. A "no name" test will NOT receive credit. Also, I suggest you print out the verification after this test is complete. The internet is great, but not fool- proof.

Each short answer is worth 5 points for a total of 15 points.  There are 3 short answers to complete. Answers must be answered in complete sentences, not as a list or an outline.  These should be answered in about 200 words.  Use your own words; if you copy or quote directly from the book or lectures, cite your references. Do not include direct quotes in your word count. There should be about 200 words of your own words and not of quotes from the book. This does not show me that you understand the information, but are simply regurgitating it back to me.

Name: (Always use your real name in this box)
Email: (Enter your exact email address)

Short Answer One:
As helpees/clients change, it is not unusual for others around them to be displeased with the changes. What would you do if the client came to a session thinking about dropping out because of the pressure from others to remain the same? Give examples and support your reasoning with information from the book or lecture.

Short Answer Two:
A client comes in and states, "My son is flunking out of high school. I've done everything I can to help him. I don't know what to do any more. How can I make him go to college?" What is this client's problem? Whose problem is it? How can a helper respond to this mother's underlying problems?

Short Answer Three:
Define self-disclosure. Discuss what a self-disclosure is and what it is not.
On page 64 of the Small book there is a practice exercise. How would you respond to this client using a self-disclosure? Justify your response.
