Students on public computers should email from within their personal email accounts, and should not use the email buttons on the class pages.

In order to see the most current course information students need to hit reload or refresh on their computers when first accessing a course page.  Failure to do this will result in students seeing a page with inaccurate dates.  If you do not know how to do this, please follow this link.

Please be aware that filling out the syllabus does not mean you are enrolled in the course. You must complete all the registration steps in order to be enrolled in a course.  The first step to completing enrollment is filling out the admissions application.  You must then go into the registration area and add the course you wish to be enrolled in. AGAIN, Filling out the syllabus will not enroll you in the course.

The weekend before the class is scheduled to begin, Barstow College allows students to preview the first lesson, the syllabus and the about the instructor page, so the students can make an informed decision before staying enrolled in a course.  All students must complete ALL registration steps before they are enrolled in a course.  Filling out the syllabus does not enroll a student in an online course.

If the course is cancelled and your contact information with the college is current, you will be notified of the course cancellation by the Barstow College Instruction Department.

Courses

The courses listed below represent all online courses offered by Barstow Community College for the current term. You will find the individual CRN for each class, the instructor, and the course. For more detailed information pertaining to each section, please refer to the class schedule section of the printed booklet, which can be obtained by emailing mkmeadows@barstow.edu.

Online courses are presented over the Internet through our online instruction website at http://www.bcconline.com.  These courses allow students to do their work from home on computers through the use of a modem or high speed internet access and commercial Internet provider. Students who do not have these facilities will be able to make use of the college labs (Barstow and Ft Irwin) to connect to the courses.

Online courses require a computer or access to a computer. Students should be aware that any form of non-traditional study requires a great deal of self-discipline and personal motivation. Online courses are generally more demanding than the traditional classroom form of instruction. The courses require that students integrate learning from textbooks with discussion group participation and frequent interaction with the instructor through email and/or telephone. Non-traditional education provides access to those prospective students who may not normally be able to attend on-campus classes. Withdrawal rates are high due to unrealistic expectations of students.

ALL NEW AND POTENTIAL ONLINE STUDENTS SHOULD READ THE FAQ PAGE BEFORE ENROLLING IN COURSES. THIS PAGE CAN BE FOUND AT: <http://www.bcconline.com/orient/faq.htm>

ALL NEW ONLINE STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE THE ONLINE ORIENTATION FOUND AT: <http://www.bcconline.com/orient/index.htm>

During the first week of class all students must complete their class syllabi in order to be considered active. Visit the website at http://www.bcconline.com for access to the form and other program information. For technical questions and concerns, you can call the Barstow Community College Online Office at (760) 252-2411 ext 7319. For registration and counseling information you can call the Barstow Community College Admissions and Records Office at (760) 252-2411 ext 7236.

NOTE: All off campus military students enrolling in online classes must submit applications, enrollment forms, and tuition assistance (TA) forms during the enrollment period. If you do not meet the deadlines, you will not be registered in time to complete classes.

Students must order their textbooks directly from the Barstow campus bookstore. Call (760) 252-2411, ext 7262 or click this link to order your books.

HOW TO CONTACT YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Each online instructor has an email address that will consist of their first initial and last name followed by @bcconline.com. For example John Smith would have an email address of jsmith@bcconline.com.

HYBRID COURSES

Spring 2008

The courses listed below represent all Hybrid courses offered by Barstow Community College for the Spring 2009 term. You will find the individual CRN for each class, the instructor, and the course.

Hybrid courses are courses in which a significant portion of the learning activities have been moved online, and time traditionally spent in the classroom is reduced but not eliminated. The goal of hybrid courses is to join the best features of in-class teaching with the best features of online learning to promote active independent learning and reduce class seat time. Using computer-based technologies, instructors use the hybrid model to redesign some lecture or lab content into new online learning activities, such as case studies, tutorials, self-testing exercises, simulations, and online group collaborations.

The Hybrid courses are designed for: 1) Busy, commuting students who can replace some on-campus time with online study. 2) Students who wish to retain the value of personal contact with the instructor and other students, instead of a solely distance education experience. 3) Students interested in active and participatory learning, both in the classroom and online.

Requirements for Hybrid courses: 1) Internet access 2) Email address 3) Ability to get to campus at least one night a week during class 4) Word processing program

How should you prepare to succeed in a Hybrid course? To succeed in a Hybrid course you must be comfortable using computers and learning new software packages. It is very hard to keep up in an online course if you are not reasonably skilled at using a web browser and email communication. You must have time to access the web several times a week; you must keep up with the class reading; you must stay current with the class calendar to meet assignment deadlines; you must read assignments and directions carefully; most importantly you must be self-motivated in order to succeed in a Hybrid course.

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR A HYBRID COURSE IF YOU CANNOT COME TO THE FT. IRWIN CAMPUS ON THE DAYS AND TIMES LISTED BELOW THE COURSE.  THESE ARE NOT TRULY DISTANCE EDUCATION COURSES IN THAT SOME CAMPUS ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.
